Heres what you should do before trying the paleo diet. You’ve probably heard of the paleo diet. The diet made popular by Dr. Loren Cordain, the paleo diet is one of the longest-running fad diets in history. It may actually no longer be a fad, but a new way of life for the people who adopt it.

If you’ve been thinking about trying it out, here are a few things you should do before making any changes to what you’re doing right now.

Before you try anything new or different with your diet, read up on it. The paleo diet for beginners weight loss is very different from other diets you’ve read or tried before. The basic idea is you eliminate any food that triggers, or is known to be causative of, chronic inflammation.

This would mean cutting out all refined industrial seed oils, like cottonseed oil, soybean oil, canola oil, corn oil, rapeseed oil, and any other similar oil.

There’s good news, however. You can still have olive oil, coconut oil, a variety of nut oils, palm oil, and most types of animal fat.

Some foods, like corn, wheat (and other cereal grains), and legumes are off-limits too. Some dieters also eliminate starches and carb-heavy foods like potatoes and rice, though this is not mandatory.

If this sounds restrictive, take heart. You have a world of vegetables, fruits, meat, nuts, and seeds to explore. And, while refined sugar is off the list, unrefined, natural, honey is not. The most reliable books on the subject include Cordain’s own book, The Paleo Diet, and Robb Wolf’s The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet.

Try Whole 9 First

Another idea you might try for the paleo diet for beginners weight loss is to start with similar diets, like Whole 9. Whole 9 is sort of like an introductory version of the paleo diet. It’s a way to ease into it. You start off by “eating clean” for 9 days. This means you eliminate all sources of refined sugar, wheat, dairy products, and other inflammatory foods from your diet for 9 whole days.

At the end of it, you assess how you feel. If you like it, you move onto the next phase.

Then Try Whole 30

Whole 30 is the same program as Whole 9, except you try the plan for 30 days. It’s supposed to help “kickstart” your weight loss as well as whole body healing. It’s especially helpful if you’ve not been eating healthy or you’re nervous about making big, scary, changes to your diet and lifestyle.

At the end of 30 days, you assess how you feel and move on to the next “phase,” which is essentially the paleo diet.

Get A Buddy

Most people who fail on this diet (and many others) don’t have a support system in place. Try to get a friend or family member to do it with you. If you can’t, consider hiring a personal coach who will be your accountability partner.

Take It Slow

When trying any new diet, including this one, take it slow. You don’t need to make rapid changes all at once. You can slowly ease into it. In fact, it’s probably the best way to make this change stick.
